Sandakan Excursion Tour
You will be picked up by car or coach and transferred to the city tour and explore the various landmarks of Sandakan such as Central Market, the most amazing variety of fresh seafood and agricultural products, Sim-Sim Water Village where houses are all built close to the water surface offering a fascinating view of the sea, the Puh Jih Syh Buddhist Temple which is situated on the hilltop of Tanah Merah and offers a panoramic view of Sandakan Bay. The tour continues to the heritage listed Agnes Keith House where the book Land Below the Wind and White Man Returns were written. The house provides an interesting insight to life during the British North Borneo colonial period. The tour includes the Sandakan Heritage Museum.
We then proceed to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary which is situated in the centre of the mangrove forest on about 400acres along the coastal land near Samawang Village. We visit one of the platforms to view the Proboscis monkeys in fairly close proximity. You may also be lucky and have a chance to see Silver Leaf Langurs, Pig Tailed Macaques, Oriental Pied Hornbills and Kingfishers.
After lunch proceed for Sabah’s first Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) which is next to the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre. The Conservation Centre was founded by Mr. Wong Siew Te, a biologist studying and working with Bornean Sun bears. BSBCC was established in 2008 through collaboration with the Sabah Wildlife Department, Sabah Forestry Department and Land Empowerment Animals People (LEAP). It is a non-government organization and was setup to prevent the endangered bear from becoming extinct. All rescued sun bears are free to roam within the forest enclosure. You have opportunity to get a close view of the world’s smallest bear from the observation platform.
We continue by visiting Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre where orphaned and injured Orang-Utans are brought to be rehabilitated and learn to fend for themselves back in the wild. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest; a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rainforest. The highlight is witnessing the feeding of Orang-Utans from a platform in the center of their forest enclosure. A scheduled documentary video about 25 minutes is a great overview of the Orang-Utan.
Later we proceed for a we visit Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) to discover the uniqueness and importance of Borneo’s rainforests. The RDC’s main highlights are its exhibition halls, the Plant Discovery Garden, the Rainforest Walk and you may enjoy practicing our balancing skills by crossing a short suspension bridge. The RDC education facility is run by the Sabah Forestry Department. The RDC Canopy Walkway is one of few such structures in South East Asia. It is 2m wide and about 347m long with 2 towers and single-column Sunbird Shelter, and about 25m above the ground. In the exhibition hall, there is a great deal of information about the nature, wildlife and other interesting things. After visiting the exhibition hall we will walk around the Plant Discovery Garden and along the Rainforest walkway and Canopy walkway searching birds and wildlife.
After the tour, transfer to hotel or Sandakan Airport. Tour finishes about 1830hrs. End of service.
